How do we know God

“God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

What does it take to begin a relationship with God? Wait for lightning to strike? Devote yourself to unselfish religious deeds? Become a better person so that God will accept you? NONE of these. God has made it very clear in the Bible how we can know Him. This will explain how you can personally begin a relationship with God, right now…

Imagine that the whole earth is filled with the knowledge of God. Each and every person knows him intimately and desires nothing but pleasing him. There would be no illness, drugs, murders, cheating or debts. A world like that would be filled with joy, sunshine and life! It seems our present world is far removed from this Utopia.

However, this prophecy that is quoted from the prophet Jeremiah has already been partly fulfilled. In verse ten God says: ‘I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God and they shall be my people.’ When the Holy Spirit was poured out onto the followers of Jesus in Acts 2, this is exactly what happened. And also today, when you trust in Jesus as your Savior, you will receive the Holy Spirit as a mark of belonging to God. The Holy Spirit will transform your heart and tune it in to God’s will. By his presence in your heart you will be able to really know God. Together with other believers you form a community of people who aim to please him and live wholesome lives.

The prophecy of verse 11 has been partially fulfilled but awaits complete fulfillment. One day, Jesus will return and a new earth and heaven will become reality. Until that day, followers of Jesus have the privilege and duty to teach others and each other about God. God does not discriminate between great and insignificant people. He desires for all of them to know him, and have life.

Do you know God and do you long for others to know him as well? Teach them about Jesus! Do you not yet know God but would you like to know him? Pray for him to be your Savior and Lord; he will send his Spirit into your heart!
